A
When my daughter Sandy was in the sixth grade, the teacher thought it would be nice if they made pinecone wreaths(松果花环) as Christmas gifts for their families. So they collected pinecones and flowers and bought other useful things to make them.
Through the years, we proudly hung up her wreath each Christmas. One year, the wreath was hanging on our door as usual when the temperature on Christmas Day reached 26 ℃.The adhesive(黏合剂) began to break down and the pinecones started falling all over our outside floor. We took the wreath down, planning to repair it.
That spring, as my husband, Don, was working on the flower bed in front of our house, he was surprised to discover a small evergreen plant. We decided to leave it alone.
The tree kept growing. When it got too big for the flower bed, we moved it to the back of our house. As the tree grew, so did our family, including four grandchildren. One day we were told that it was a pity that someday our nice tree would have to be cut down for safety reasons.
We just couldn’t let that happen to our tree.We decided to move it again, this time to Sandy and her husband Joel’s new house. My husband helped Joel move the tree from the hole. They were afraid they would wreck its roots, so they dug very carefully. Finally, five hours later, the tree came out. They covered the roots as best as they could and put the whole tree in Joel’s truck.
After an hour’s drive they planted the tree, hoping for the best.I’m happy to report that our brave tree is still growing, now producing pinecones of its own.Maybe someday we’ll even have another homegrown Christmas tree.
